My next book, Eye on the Struggle: Ethel L. Payne's Journey Through the Civil Rights Revolution, will be published by Amistad, an imprint of HarperCollins, in 2014. Described as “First Lady of the Black Press” and one of the “silent giants of the Civil Rights movement,” Payne was so central to the movement she was at President Johnson’s side when he signed the Civil Rights Act.
